Good architecture lets nature in.

architecture + environment

Sustainable architecture is architecture that aims to minimize negative impacts of buildings on the natural environment by efficiency and moderation seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by efficiency and moderation in the use of energy, materials, space etc.
It approves a collaboration with nature.

This case study brings to light the basic principles and aspects of passive design, specifically in shading + lighting. Analyses are done to identify factors affecting the comfort level of users in a building as well as its compliance with the Malaysian code of practice as stated in MS1525, UBBL and GBI.

case study: shading + lighting

methodology
As a group, we were required to collect quantitative and qualitative data on shading and lighting in two spaces from our own houses. All data have to be arranged and analyzed on two A3-sized virtual research boards. Problems were identified and solutions were proposed in line with the principles of passive design.

reflection
Through this study, I have learned a wide range of knowledge and considerations in the relationship between architecture + environment and clarified a lot of design considerations which were previously blurry. I was also exposed to numerous passive design strategies as well as methods in taking measurements and documenting data in the form of diagrams, plans and sections.

This module has educated me on the current events and issues of building construction in the environment and efforts done in reducing the negative impacts of construction on the environment by maximizing the ways of green architecture.
