Project 2
Construction Detailing of Building Elements

This project requires a collaboration with the interior architecture students and so my group consists of four architecture students and four interior architecture students. This group project requires us to study the construction of a a two-storey terraced house in Malaysia. We were assigned a material and asked to produce detailed set of construction drawings, to scale. Emphasis was given on showing the details specific to the material assigned. Thankfully, we were given a checklist of drawings that were required of us and so we did not need to come up with the list ourselves.

Chosen Building: Mawar Indah Double Storey Terrace, Kota Seriemas

Material Assigned: Timber

Reflection

Project-wise, I learned that there are a lot of things involved in the whole construction process, both in large scale and down to the smallest details. This project gave me a glimpse of the complexity of construction, especially for materials that need a more 'specific' technique like timber. I was in charge of drawing the door details and sketching out the foundation construction. Compared to the others, I felt like my workload is lighter and I am just grateful for that. When I look at my teammates from interior architecture, who were doing the hard work of producing construction drawings without prior experience, I cannot help but wonder if I would have the same drive and patience as they had. (Flashback to the Intro to Drawing module in FNBE)

Honestly, I was a bit worried when I heard stories from seniors who had to deal with bad 'rider' teammates and were forced to carry a much heavier workload because of that. Thankfully, I got great teammates who not only did their part of the work but were also active in group meetings. There was really good cooperation and teamwork the whole time and if this project was longer, I am sure I could learn more from them.

A shoutout to my tutor and module coordinator Mr. Azim, who directed all the lessons so well and frequently updates the Facebook group. Grateful for his guidance and also his display of musical talent (like when he played La Vie En Rose on his keyboard) which was a much, much needed break from class.

I really hope to meet more tutors like the ones I met in this module in the future.
