Project 1
Diagraming Architectural Principles

P1 key image

For this group project, we were assigned to study an architect and one of his key works and then produce a set of scaled architectural drawings. Next, we are to analyse the key building through the drawings and then translate the information into a set of 5 analysis diagrams and 5 diagrammatic models (8 x 8 x 8 cm).

The following are the criteria that we had to focus on:

  • CONCEPT

  • STRUCTURE – grid, rhythm

  • CONTEXT

  • SPACE PLANNING (organization & relationship) - centralized, interlocking

  • CIRCULATION – spiral, linear, radial

Assigned Architect: ARCHWERK + Formafatal

Assigned Building: COCO Art Villas, Costa Rica

Reflection

As this was the first group architectural project in my whole degree (in studio i all projects were individual projects), I was a bit concerned in how I was going to 'talk design' with other people. Thankfully, it was not that 'design-heavy' as we were just talking about diagramming principles and drawings. I was working with a lot of new people: new personalities and new work styles. There were some cracks here and there but those cracks just taught me how working as a team is like in real life. Working as a team, it was a great feeling to have knowing that your burden was not yours to carry alone.

Project-wise, I feel like this project helps me improve my skills in doing case studies as we learn how to go deep into architects' design styles and the message they convey through the applications of architectural principles in their designs. I am also really grateful to Ms Indrani, our tutor, for helping push us to grasp deeper thoughts and concepts.

It was overall a good experience to look back on and it makes me look forward to when I can experience that collaborative atmosphere in a full-fledged architectural firm in

the future.
