Time-travel to the past.
Project 1
Reading the Contexts of Traditional Streets
For this first project, we are required to capture the essence of a chosen street in Malaysia. All the data collected from the research and analysis were then organized into two categories: physical (tangible) and non-physical (intangible) elements, in the form of sketches. Along with the 10-page sketch journal is a summary of the captured essence of the street as well as its context in the modern world today.
Chosen Street: Jalan Hang Kasturi, Melaka

Reflection
The street that I chose is Jalan Hang Kasturi in the infamous historical city of Melaka. What drew me to the street was the co-existence and harmony between the old and the new, as shown by the many architectural facades from different times, from the periods of foreign colonization to the modern Melaka today. It is very fascinating how facades can tell stories: whether it be a particular historical event, local trades or even traditional arts.
Visiting the street, albeit virtually, made me feel like I was both a local and a tourist at the same time. The rojak distribution of building typologies emulates warmth and a sense of openness and perhaps, an adaptability to change. This interesting relationship fascinates me and I hope to visit Jalan Hang Kasturi in person one day.
