Project no.2
Tectonics: Design Principles, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration.
Tectonics in architecture is defined as "the science or art of construction, both in relation to use and artistic design.
- Robert Maulden, MIT
In this project, we learn how to generate design intentions through the exploration of material (timber + supporting material) and their tectonic features. Additionally, anthropometrics and ergonomics are introduced, with the core task being to research on human form and movement based on a chosen banal action. Skills acquired from Project 1 are also developed, such as generating a more specific design intention, design elements and principles, and model-making skills.

In this project, we learn how to generate design intentions through the exploration of material (timber + supporting material) and their tectonic features. Additionally, anthropometrics and ergonomics are introduced, with the core task being to research on human form and movement based on a chosen banal action ( to see the beauty in the commonality). Skills acquired from Project 1 are also further developed, such as generating a more specific design intention, design elements and principles, and model-making skills.
Through this project, I captured the basis of the role of material (specifically timber + tensile fabric) in the architectural design process, as well as develop my research skills and case studies. I also learned how architecture creates for people, through the consideration of anthropometrics and ergonomics.
Admittedly, this project was the most challenging project for me this semester due to my negligence and poor time management skills. It made me realize my tendency of turning apathetic and 'avoiding the problem' when things get hard. As mentally exhausting as it was, I am grateful for this project as it was a 'wake-up' call for me to stop procrastinating when faced with a problem and to face them head-on, one step at a time.
Only onwards and upwards.
